Popular dating show First Dates specialises in bringing us blind dates which are sometimes cute, and often funny. But the real joy is witnessing a meeting so awkward it teleports you back to the age of 16 when fancying someone made your retainer sweat.

Which is why for this series they’re focusing entirely on teen love.

Ah, young love. When a young person’s fancy turns to fumbling about in your bedroom hoping your mum doesn’t burst in with a tray of chocolate digestives just as you’re about to receive a love bite, to somewhat paraphrase Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

The First Dates restaurant, presided over by Gallic cupid Fred Sirieix, is hosting pairs of teenagers and the results were a post-Valentine’s Day delight.

One lad was trying to be cheeky so compared his date to the Hobbit; it was a bold strategy which sadly left him sloping home to watch the Lord Of The Rings Extended Edition DVD on his lonesome.

The best bit about Teen First Dates is returning to the first flush of romance by reminding yourself how confident and desperate to impress your courting partner you were.

“I’m ready to settle down and have a proper relationship now,” said one slightly dopey lad, who looked like he might be straight on to Minecraft after filming stopped.

Bless their delightful little lovesick hearts.
