Heather Macdonald swapped the bright lights of Glasgow for the clear skies of the Highlands a few years ago.

She has done a fair bit of exploring since, which she shares on her blog, Heather and the Highlands.

We challenged Heather to pick three of her favourite places across the country.

Isle of Arran

Arran has always been a favourite. Image: Heather Macdonald

I’ve always loved Scottish islands and my big goal at the moment is to visit 30 Scottish islands by the time I turn 30.

My favourite island, however, will always be the Isle of Arran. I grew up going there most years and I always loved going back and exploring ‘Scotland in miniature’. Some highlights I love revisiting on Arran are the Glenashdale Falls walk in Whiting Bay and getting to visit the Arran Cheese Shop in Brodick.

Five Sisters of Kintail

I’ll make it to the top someday! Image: Heather Macdonald

The view that made me fall in love with the Scottish Highlands. I just love this view so much and I am so thankful that I get to work directly at the foot of the Five Sisters every day.

One day, I hope to be able to walk up to the top of the Five Sisters. My favourite spot to see them is from the top of Mam Ratagan on the road over to Glenelg. It truly is my favourite view in the Scottish Highlands.

Oban Seafood Hut (The Green Shack)

We recently visited Oban for the first time and had an amazing time.

One of our highlights was discovering this fantastic spot. Nothing beats eating fresh Scottish seafood just a stone’s throw away from the sea.

Our favourite thing to eat was their portion of mussels, cooked in white wine and garlic. So fresh and so delicious and only £5. We didn’t even mind eating them in the rain.
