April Fools’ Day: The best of today’s pranks… did you fall for any?

Former rugby star turns ref, a helter skelter tower and Oor Wullie's honorary degree?
Former rugby star turns ref, a helter skelter tower and Oor Wullie's honorary degree?

Nobody is to be trusted until the clock hits 12pm.

We wanted to join in the fun, so our very own Darryl Smith came up with an exclusive on a scientific breakthrough – partly influenced by his ‘Helpless Blog of a First Time Dad‘ and the plot of a 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger film…

The prank was based on this 1994 movie...

Elsewhere, The University of Dundee handed out honorary degrees to some of the city’s famous faces – including Oor Wullie!

Glasgow University claimed to have a rather inventive new use for the historic University Tower.

It may just have been for April Fools’ Day but it looks like great fun!

UofG Tower Helter Skelter

⭐ BREAKING NEWS: UofG Tower Helter Skelter ⭐Very excited to reveal the true purpose of UofG's iconic tower construction work – to create the world’s first helter skelter inside a listed building! Even more reason to celebrate the scaffolding coming down! For months, construction crews have worked in total secrecy inside the 279-foot-tall tower, to install a state-of-the-art helter skelter which will be open to the public from the end of April. Nearly half a kilometre of tightly twisting slide is packed into the historic tower, and we hope it'll attract visitors from around the world. We caught up with Vice-Principal Prof Frank Coton, David Hasson (Estates & Building), Willie Miller (Conservation Masonry), & SRC President Liam King to find out more! And you can read the full story here: http://ow.ly/10a4MJ#UofGTower

The world of politics was also at the wind-up.

Observers of Scottish politics in particular would have been rubbing their eyes at the latest poll from Weber Shandwick – showing the Conservatives winning the highest number of seats.

STV showed off exclusive footage of one of their stars entering the upcoming series of Britain’s Got Talent.

A familiar face shows off skills that no-one knew he had…

It also looks like there’s a new member of Wet Wet Wet’s crew.

On Facebook, this post from the Dumfries and Galloway Police Division will no doubt have caught a few people out.

Keep watching.

We are URGENTLY looking to identify this man who filmed himself climbing Towerwood Radio mast near Dumfries this morning…

Pimm’s decided today was the day to launch their sponsorship of one of London’s most iconic landmarks.

Their logo will appear on the clock face of the Elizabeth Tower (a.k.a. Big Ben), if you believe this video.

The world of sport always comes up with a few good April Fools’ Day stories.

Former Scotland rugby star Al Kellock appears to have a new role after retiring from playing the game… refereeing it!

Down south, Arsenal teamed up with car manufacturer Citroen to give the Emirates Stadium a sunroof.

Not all pranks go to plan, however, and Google’s backfired in spectacular fashion.

They added a tool to Gmail called “Mic Drop” that allowed the user to have the last word in an email conversation.

When the button was clicked, it sent the reply (complete with a GIF of a Minion from Despicable Me dropping a microphone) and muted all further responses.

Unfortunately the button was all to easy to click by accident and after complaints from users Google disabled the feature.

On their Gmail blog the company said: “Well, it looks like we pranked ourselves this year. Due to a bug, the Mic Drop feature inadvertently caused more headaches than laughs. We’re truly sorry. The feature has been turned off. If you are still seeing it, please reload your Gmail page.”
