Rangers' win against St Mirren yesterday meant Celtic had to win at Tannadice to delay their rivals' celebrations

Rangers have been crowned Scottish Premiership champions for the first time since 2011 after Celtic were held to a goalless draw at Dundee United.

Steven Gerrard has claimed the first major league title of his managerial career, with Rangers now holding an unassailable 20-point lead in the league table.

Rangers were consigned to Scotland’s fourth tier back in 2012 after financial collapse, but have rebuilt steadily – and have now denied Celtic a record-breaking 10th consecutive top-flight crown.

Rangers cruised past St Mirren 3-0 at Ibrox on Saturday, which brought the title in sight.

And Celtic’s failure to find a winner at Tannadice gifted Rangers the silverware.

Former Liverpool and England midfielder Gerrard took the Rangers helm in 2018, and has now completed a remarkable end to Celtic’s prior dominance.

Rangers fans flouted lockdown rules at Ibrox to celebrate the 55th crown for the second day running.

A statement on the club’s website read: “After a superb campaign so far, Gers’ win over St Mirren yesterday put them on the verge of glory, with results elsewhere today meaning they can mathematically no longer be caught with incredibly six matches still to play.

“It’s title number 55 for the club – the most of any football club in the world – and the first in 10 years following one of the most arduous decades in the club’s history.

“There is little doubt today’s success can be put down to the unbelievable loyalty of the Rangers support – you stood by this club in its hour of need, and you deserve this success as much as every member of Steven Gerrard’s players and backroom staff, Ross Wilson, Douglas Park and the club’s board.

“They have been simply outstanding this season, and are still unbeaten and have a Last 16 UEFA Europa League tie with Slavia Prague to look forward to on Thursday night.

“With 32 matches played, Gers have accumulated 88 points through 28 wins and four draws. 77 goals have been scored, and, unbelievably at this stage of the season, just nine have been conceded.

Rangers fans flouted lockdown restrictions

Speaking after yesterday’s match when the title was all but secured, Gerrard said: “I’m obviously really, really happy and proud.

“I can certainly relate to the emotions that I’ve had as a player.

“At the same time, I want to stay controlled and humble because obviously it’s not confirmed yet but I think everyone knows it’s 99.99% done.

“This victory puts us millimetres away from being champions.

“On a monumental day for the club, this is probably the most important three points we have delivered.

“What we saw was a team now in a place where it can play with control, maturity and style.”
