FORMER Rangers defender Henning Berg has reportedly applied to be the next manager of Rangers.

The Daily Record writes that the 48-year-old, who spent his last season as a player at Ibrox, is eager to return to Glasgow.

The Norwegian has been without a management job since being dismissed from Hungarian side Videoton earlier this year.

Derek McInnes remains favourite to take over from Pedro Caixinha, with current interim boss Graeme Murty also tipped to have a chance to take on the role permanently.

Rangers last week said they had received many applications for the job and will take time to consider their options.

Berg made 30 appearances for the Ibrox club in the 2003-4 season.

He spent most of his career at Blackburn Rovers, who he also later managed, as well as spending four seasons at Manchester United.

He moved into management at Norwegian side Lyn shortly after hanging up his boots, and had a spell at Lillestrom before taking over at Ewood Park.

His return to Lancashire ended in disappointment and lasted just 10 games, with his side winning only one.

Berg took charge of Legia Warsaw in 2014 and won the Polish title and cup but was sacked the following year.

At Videoton, he came close to leading his team to the title but was sacked on the final day after narrowly missing out to Honved.

Local media reports say that his team played an attractive style of football and scored more and conceded less than anyone else in the league.

However, it was dropped points against smaller sides that would eventually cost them the title.
