Karen Gillan was the world’s favourite celebrity Scot in 2021, according to online search data.

The Guardians Of The Galaxy star edged out fellow actor Gerard Butler as the most Googled living Scots star according to analysis of global online search trends throughout last year.

Outlander star Sam Heughan was third ahead of singer Lewis Capaldi and chef Gordon Ramsay. Ewan McGregor, James McAvoy, Richard Madden, Tilda Swinton and David Tennant make up the top 10 for 2021.

Data provider Semrush analysed online search trends for more than 300 famous Scots from the worlds of film and television, music and sport between January 1 and December 31.

The research revealed the top Scots worldwide and also in Scotland itself as well as whose stars rose fastest internationally and at home.

Gillan, 34, one of the film industry’s most bankable stars after starring in a string of blockbusters, tops the global list for the second year in a row.

She averaged more than two million searches per month last year peaking at 2.74 million in July, when her movie Gunpowder Milkshake was released.

The Inverness-born actress, who shot to fame in 2010 as Doctor Who sidekick Amy Pond, stayed ahead of nearest rival, action hero Butler, who was searched nearly 1.7 million times per month on average.

However, no living star comes close to the late Sir Sean Connery. The James Bond icon, who died aged 90 in 2020, is not counted on the official list but the research shows he still attracted an average 5.175 million searches in 2021.

Meanwhile, Game Of Thrones actress Rose Leslie averaged 586,000 searches in 2021, but hit one million searches in August, the month BBC thriller Vigil first aired.
