Refreshed Ford Mondeo range unveiled with new hybrid estate

Ford has announced an overhaul to the Mondeo range with a hybrid engine available on the line for the first time.

The new hybrid powertrain combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine and an electric motor, powered by 1.4 kWh battery. This system recharges the battery with an internal generator so there is no need to plug the car into an external power source.

The Mondeo Hybrid produces 184bhp and is expected to emit 103g/km in CO2 emissions — 5g/km more than its saloon alternative.

Although that tips it into a higher VED band, it brings with it more practicality — boasting a 403-litre load capacity with all seats in place, rising to 1,508 litres when the rear seats are folded flat.

Alongside the new electrified estate, a new diesel engine debuts across the Mondeo line-up — available with two power outputs. The two-litre unit can produce either 148bhp or 187bhp, with targeted emissions at 127g/km and 133g/km of CO2 respectively. It’ll be offered with the choice of an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual gearbox.

More technology is being introduced as part of this refresh too. Adaptive cruise control is set to be offered for the first time, along with Intelligent Speed Assist — which can automatically adjust the speed of the vehicle when limits change and cruise control is active.

Ford’s Sync3 infotainment system has also been added, displayed on an eight-inch touchscreen while also boasting support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Minor styling tweaks have been made to the saloon and estate, too. New fog-light and daytime running light designs feature, along with a revised grille.

No word yet on pricing for the revised Ford Mondeo range, but expect to hear more before it goes on sale in March.
