Land Rover has announced that it is adding a new straight-six mild hybrid engine to its Range Rover Sport range in a special-edition model.

The Range Rover Sport HST will be priced from £81,250, and utilises an in-line six engine with 395bhp.

It comes as a replacement for the old V6, but has been designed to deliver the same levels of performance alongside better fuel economy and emissions

Thanks to 550Nm of torque, it’s capable of sending the Range Rover Sport from 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds, and onwards to a top speed of 140mph.

Despite this performance, Land Rover claims that it’ll return 30.5mpg combined, while emitting 213g/km CO2 when tested under the old NEDC measures.

The engine utilises an electric supercharger, which quickly spools up to eliminate lag from the twin-scroll turbocharger.

In addition, it makes use of a mild-hybrid system, which harvests the energy generated while braking and stores it in a small battery. This energy then assists when pulling away, and allows the stop/start function to operate for longer.

Nick Rogers, executive director of product engineering for Jaguar Land Rover, said: “In-line six-cylinder engines are inherently better balanced than V6 designs and our all-new Ingenium unit builds on that promise to optimise efficiency in all operating conditions.

“Advanced features, including an electric supercharger, ensure distinctive Range Rover Sport performance and responses, while the intelligent MHEV system harvests energy to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions.”

Inside, you’ll find new carbon fibre trim, suede cloth detailing on the wheel and gear lever. There are also red brake callipers on the outside, helping to distinguish the HST from the rest of the range.
