Scots tourists were warned they could be giving money to dictator Colonel Gaddafi.

A Sunday Post investigation revealed the Libyan Government owned several hotels and complexes on the island of Malta.

The country was a favourite tourist destination for Scots.

Two hot air balloonists avoided death in a miracle escape near Loch Lomond.

Hugh Savage and his brother Nicholas were in the balloon when it was blown on to the side of a mountain.

The basket plummeted 200 ft down the mountain but the pair escaped with minor injuries.

Locals in Castlebar, Northern Ireland, were happy for Lord Lucan to stay missing.

They paid the Lord rent for land in the village. Since Lucan had disappeared in 1974 following the murder of his nanny, however, the renters had been allowed to use the land for free.

Scotland’s religious establishment launched an attack on an American TV evangelist.

Victory With Morris Cerullo had become the first daily Christian TV programme to be screened in the UK.

However, officials from the Catholic Church and the Church of Scotland slammed the programme, calling it “disturbing”.

English giants Liverpool were poised to swoop for highly-rated goalkeeper Andy Goram.

They were reportedly willing to pay £1 million for the Hibs No 1.

Eventually he moved to Rangers, before later joining Man Utd.

Police continued their search for schoolgirl Vicky Hamilton, who had been missing for two months.

Officers from Lothian and Borders Police were searching 400 square miles of countryside looking for clues.

It wasn’t until 2007 that her remains were discovered, at Peter Tobin’s old address in Bathgate.

Tobin was convicted of her murder in December, 2008. He is serving a life sentence for the murder of three young women.

Steve Marriott, front man of 60s band The Small Faces, died in a fire at his home, a16th Century cottage in Essex.

Police said the death of the songwriter was a tragic accident and believed it had been started by a cigarette left burning in the bedroom.

The Small Faces had a string of hits including Sha La La La Lee, Watcha Gonna Do About It? Itchycoo Park, Lazy Sunday and their only chart-topper, All Or Nothing.
