Rangers boss Mark Warburton heads for London in search of a striker

LONDON is calling for Rangers this week as Mark Warburton looks to cash in on his contacts south of the Border to sign a striker.

The Light Blues unveiled their third signing of the summer on Friday when former Swindon Town goalkeeper Wes Foderingham was paraded at Murray Park.

And though delighted at securing the services of the one-time England Under-18 internationalist, the new boss is eager to continue his squad building.

To that end a trip to England has been lined up where Rangers will have a few days using Tottenham’s training facilities, culminating with a closed-doors game against Spurs.

There Warburton is likely to decide whether or not to offer a deal to 35-year-old free agent John Eustace.

The ex-Derby County midfielder was expected to be the new manager’s first signing but concerns over his fitness have led to a more-cautious approach being taken.

It will also offer a valuable opportunity for Rangers to try to woo the London club’s promising young talent.

Warburton has a strong relationship with Tottenham from his time working in youth football which allowed his previous club, Brentford, to get England Under-21 star Alex Pritchard on a season’s loan last season.

He would dearly love to fix up a similar arrangement for his new employers this season, using the promise of regular first-time football in front of 40,000 crowds as a lure.

England Under-19 midfielder Harry Winks was linked with a move to the club last month and a deal could yet be struck.

The Rangers boss is also keen on free agent Reece Wabara, ex-Manchester City, who has shown up well since arriving north on trial last week.

They could miss out on the right-back, though, as he is understood to also have options in the English Championship.

Priority, though, remains a striker.

He is a big fan of Sheffield Wednesday’s Stevie May from watching him in the English Championship last season.

He would love to take him north, whether on loan or on as a permanent signing.

The first option, though, is dependent on Wednesday seeing it as a good move from their perspective and the second could be just out of his reach with the English club having spent £800,000 to land him from Saints.

That being the case, a Spurs prospect would fit the bill with the Rangers manager needing no telling that Harry Kane had loan spells with Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester before making his top-team breakthrough at White Hart Lane.
