Michel Platini reckons the world’s top football clubs will accept the World Cup being switched to the winter in 2022 but I reckon he could be in for a shock.
It honestly wouldn’t surprise me if there is some kind of revolt over the plan, simply because of the havoc it would cause particularly in Europe’s big- money leagues.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think there’s any way the tournament can go ahead in the summer. It’s far too hot in June and July to play football in Qatar.
I was in neighbouring Dubai recently and it was too hot to even SIT in the sun!
But if Platini reckons the biggest clubs in the world will shrug their shoulders and accept being messed about because of FIFA’s stupidity, I think he’s kidding himself on.
The Premier League, the Bundesliga and La Liga are massive money-making organisations, with huge commercial interests to protect.
Those are the things they will put first. Not the World Cup.
And when FIFA’s Executive Committee makes its final decision in March, they will have to take that into account.
