I don’t buy into Commons’ take on Celtic or the Dons – there are still issues to be resolved

Don’t think for a moment today’s clash between Aberdeen and Celtic will be a dead rubber.

Of course, it is disappointing the outcome of the title is already known ahead.

A Pittodrie showdown between the pair just a couple of weeks before the close of the season would have been great for the Scottish game.

Especially at a time when Rangers are still out of the top flight.

I also have no doubt Celtic’s coaches and players would have preferred to tie it up by seeing off their nearest rivals on their own ground.

There do, however, remain issues to be resolved.

For Ronny Deila’s team, there is the opportunity to prove they are worthy title winners.

And to complete a clean sweep against Aberdeen in the League this season and, in doing so, prove the truth of Kris Commons’ claim that they were never really any threat to them.

Personally, I think the Hoops midfielder quite enjoys mixing things up a little from time to time.

He doesn’t deliver the kind of bland statements you hear from his fellow professionals and is a popular interview.

It was significant he was the first Celtic player to produce a negative line after the title win was confirmed when declaring Deila’s team to already be better than the group who played under predecessor, Neil Lennon.

I don’t buy it. They are an improving side, who came commendably close to clinching what would have been only the fourth domestic Treble win in the club’s history.

But . . .

They will need to at least reach the group stages of the Champions League before they are worthy of the kind of acclaim Commons has showered on them.

You can’t take the Celtic Park win over Barcelona away from Lennon.

I also take issue with Commons saying Aberdeen were never a threat. When they were sitting on top of the League, they certainly were. It is wrong to undersell what the Dons have done this season.

Win, or even draw, this afternoon’s renewal and they will have amassed more League points than any other club outside the Old Firm since 1994-95.

That’s a landmark which would pay tribute to the consistency of their players over the year.

It should also provide them with all the motivation they need today and next season.
