Steven Gerrard can testify to the fact not all farewells can be fondly remembered.
The Liverpool legend scored in his 710th and final game for the Anfield club last Sunday, but it was of small consolation as opponents Stoke smashed in six.
Today Stuart McCall will send his Rangers team out at Fir Park, knowing that for several of his players it is likely to be their last appearance in a Light Blue jersey.
And he will do so urging them to seize the opportunity to make it a memorable occasion for themselves, their team-mates and the fans.
“I will say: ‘Do everything you can to make this a success’,” he said. “‘It is the last game of the season and the chance is still there, so go for it’.”
With Darren McGregor suspended and McCall admitting to fitness concerns over a couple of the men who featured in the first leg, it may be an unorthodox-looking Rangers line up that takes the pitch at Fir Park.
“The stage we are at, it is a case of seeing whoever is available and getting on with it,” said the Rangers manager.
“You play and it might be somebody from left field, who hasn’t really been involved, who goes and does well.”
Kris Boyd is in line for a start, and it would be quite a story if, after one of the worst campaigns of his career, he was to finish the season by shooting the Govan club up the Premiership.
The same too would be true if Lee McCulloch the captain who was booed by sections of all four Ibrox stands during the Falkirk draw and, at 37, is a likely summer departure was to be the hero of the hour.
“We are going back to Lee’s old club, and as someone who has played everywhere central midfield, holding midfield, at the back and up front as well he is always an option,” said McCall.
“I would imagine the game won’t be the prettiest. It will be more us putting balls in the box, you would think, or trying to get balls in the box.
“He could be effective in that regard.”
Also in the thoughts of the Rangers boss are the Northern Irish internationalist, Shane Ferguson, and Tom Walsh, both of whom looked good coming off the substitutes bench in the first leg of the Play-off Final.
