Billy McKay will find his shooting boots

Billy McKay couldn’t stop scoring last season now he can’t buy a goal.

Aaron Doran reckons the fact that Inverness are STILL winning games proves they’re more than just a one-man team.

McKay’s 22 strikes last term inspired Caley Thistle to a top-six finish and the League Cup Final, but without the Northern Irishman’s haul, the Highlanders would have been staring relegation in the face.

This season McKay has found the net just once, yet his side are flying.

And ahead of today’s Highland derby, Aaron Doran insisted that Inverness are no longer reliant on their star striker.

He said: “There’s a lot about us beyond Billy. I think with the style we’re playing under the gaffer, Marley Watkins and I are coming inside more so we’re getting better scoring chances.

“Last season we needed other players to chip in more, but this season Marley and I have five goals between us.

“We’ve been a bit more selfish and I don’t think Billy is liking it but both of us want to get into double figures.

“It’s unfortunate for Billy at the moment that he hasn’t scored as many as he’d like.

“But I’m sure Billy will also get into double figures when we start supplying him with better balls.

“Our final pass needs to be a bit better, but Billy’s always sharp and he’ll get on the end of them sooner or later.

“By the end of the season I’m sure he’ll have more and if as many players as possible can chip in, it will benefit the team.”

By contrast to high-flying Inverness, Ross County have had a poor start to the season.

But after finally claiming their first win of the season against Dundee last weekend, Doran believes the Staggies will be buzzing for today’s derby clash.

That’s a prospect the Irishman is relishing, however, and he is determined to continue his scoring run against the Dingwall side.

He said: “I think they’ll feel they’ve turned a corner. Dundee are a good side. They started the season off really well. We know how good they are because they got a draw against us up here.

“So I think County will be on a high. Beating Dundee means they’re coming into this game off the back of a strong performance. But I like playing these games. Last season I scored two goals against them.

“It’s a great atmosphere to play in and it’s a big thing for the Highlands. To go out and play on Sunday, it’s a big game so everyone wants to play. But as I said, they’ll be on a high, so we need to go out and give everything we’ve got.”
