Things are hotting up for Frozen star Idina Menzel with huge UK tour

You’ve probably heard her voice more than any other over the past year, especially if you’ve got kids or grandkids.

In fact, she’s one of the highest rated and most respected singers in the world.

But you’d be forgiven for not being immediately familiar with Idina Menzel.

She’s been an absolute star in Broadway musicals especially the likes of the smash-hit show Wicked for years, and recently loaned her vocal cords to Disney for the movie, Frozen, which you may have heard of!

The result was a song which is familiar to anyone who knows a girl under 12 the absolutely massive smash, Let It Go.

Idina’s about to embark on a huge tour and is coming to Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall on June 24.

I interviewed Idina for American telly a decade ago, when she was merely a well-established theatre star.

She’s had a great career since, but then Frozen came along.

“I never expected it to become the phenomenon it did,” she told me last week.

“To have sung a song that changes and moves people, and that affects the way children see the world I had no idea it would connect with so many people.

“It’s been quite a year and a half.”

It certainly has. And the success of Frozen has prompted Idina to go on a world tour.

“I’ve come to the UK several times before I took Wicked to the West End.

“I’m getting to go to a few new places this year and the UK feels like home.

“The venues might be getting larger but I want it to still be intimate, like my previous shows.

“All the performers I love are not afraid to be vulnerable and I feel like they connect with an audience.

“I try to be spontaneous, make some jokes and not be afraid to make mistakes.

“If you’re doing the same thing every night then you notice if something changes.

“It’s important to feel each city gets their own concert too!”

I love it when an artist gives the audience a bit of local chat during a gig hopefully Idina will declare she’s a Partick Thistle fan in Glasgow.

Idina’s got a better set of lungs on her than the usual footy fan on the terraces of Firhill, right enough.

It’s going to be a great gig at the Theatre Royal get yourself along.

Next week I’ll bring you a bit about my meeting with George Clooney.

I mercilessly grilled him on whether or not he’s having kids.

Find out more in the next column I can’t reveal what he said, but I can say he mentioned my Paxman-like grilling of him on American telly the next day!
