It’s the Hollywood Ross-car ceremony!

Our man in LA picks his showbiz moments of 2013.

Well that was another year at the sharp end of showbusiness in Los Angeles.

And what a year it has been. I’ve really enjoyed 2013, with all its ups and downs.

It was the usual mix of celebrity interviews, hard work (my sister Elaine has just read this bit and loudly proclaimed: “Aye, right!”) and, of course, a lot of laughs.

I say it all the time, but I have one of the best jobs in the world and I’m very lucky to be doing this.

So, to celebrate another great year, I’m doing my Second Annual Sunday Post Ross-cars.

First of all is the Red Carpet Moment of the Year there were plenty to choose from, but one that sticks out was getting slagged off by George Clooney. I was working at the Britannia Awards held by Bafta in LA and grabbed a moment with one of the coolest stars in the world. My final question was about what he thought of British women. George is always quizzed about his love life, and he decided to get stuck into me.

“Ross, I’ve seen you do many segues over the years but that’s by far and away the worst one ever,” he said. It was delivered in his usual charming way, of course, before he physically spun me around to face the camera and told me to get on with it. Thanks, George!

The Hardest-Working Star Award goes to Kate Winslet. She was happy to stop and chat in Toronto despite being eight months pregnant. What a trouper a lot of celebs are quite guarded when it comes to family, but she was happy to talk about her baby bump. Kate got married to her third husband last year a man with the unlikely name of Ned Rocknroll. I can’t think why she kept her own surname!

My Interview of the Year is a tough one. There are too many to count but I loved sitting down with the likes of Cher, Gwyneth Paltrow, Barry Gibb and Gary Barlow. Having a chat with Robert De Niro and Michael Douglas at the same time was a definite highlight though. I’ve met Michael a few times before and he introduced me to “Bobby”. There was no way I could call Mr De Niro that, though. I settled on the informal “Sir”.

The Sadly Missed category is unfortunately a busy one. There were three untimely deaths that really stood out for me this year.

Glee’s Cory Monteith died in July in a hotel room in Canada after a toxic mix of drugs and alcohol. And last month Fast And Furious star Paul Walker, one of the nicest guys in the business, died in a tragic car accident. Both are sadly missed, but it was also very upsetting to see the death of James Gandolfini, who passed away following a heart attack in June. He was the definition of gentle giant. During interviews, the star of The Sopranos came across as almost baffled by his fame.

Elsewhere, the Crisis Management Award has to go to Jennifer Lawrence. As she collected her award for Best Actress at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, part of her dress fell off. Jennifer is too cool for school though. Even having your skirt fall down in front of hundreds of millions of viewers didn’t faze her and she just laughed it off. She got her picture on the front pages the next day. Of course she went on to win the Best Actress Oscar a couple of weeks later, where she fell up the stairs as she went to collect her award. This brilliant, down-to-earth young actress will most certainly be at the Academy awards again in 2014.

As for my Favourite Sporting Moment? Well, of course, it has to be watching Andy Murray win the Wimbledon title.

The glitterati here in La-La Land knew what it meant for Andy to win and loads of them backed him. One of them was probably Bradley Cooper. The Hangover star was cutting a dash at the final alongside Paisley’s Gerard Butler, both in almost matching blue suits. The rumour at the time was there was going to be a movie of this year’s Wimbledon, and Gerard Butler was in line to play Murray . . . if only he could master the Scottish accent. Fortunately, Gerry didn’t hold any grudges when I met him a few weeks later for a night out.

And where did this pair of West of Scotland hellraisers go? The opening of a men’s clothes shop. Oliver Reed would be horrified.
