Explosions rock Brussels Zaventem airport and city Metro station

Police in Belgium confirmed that at least one person has died after the blasts in the airport’s departure hall, while local media have reported 13 people have died and 35 have been severely injured after explosions in Brussels.

The incident came as the Belgian capital was on a state of high alert following the arrest of Paris terror attack suspect Salah Abdeslam in the city last week.

Sky News Middle East correspondent Alex Rossi, who was at the airport en route for Tel Aviv, told the channel: “I could feel the buildings move.”

According to reports the incident centred on an American Airlines desk in a departure hall.

Belgian media were reporting several casualties.

Local media has also reported an explosion at a Metro station in the Maelbeek area of Brussels, about 500 metres from the buildings of the European Parliament.

A tweet from Brussels’ Metro system confirmed that all stations will be closing.

On the Metro, traveller Evan Lamos tweeted a picture of passengers climbing from his train into the tunnel.
