A massive search for a missing pet cat brought a town to a standstill yesterday.
Scores of people marched through the streets of Maidstone in Kent, as part of a concerted campaign to find missing cat, Marmie.
Dubbed Marmie’s Barmy Army, the marchers turned out at the behest of devastated cat owner Tracy Brewster, 52, who has fought a tireless seven-week campaign to try and trace her lost pet.
Accompanied by a volunteer banjo player, they handed out leaflets, spoke to passers-by and chanted their way through the town.
Tracy’s campaign has attracted more than 1,900 followers on a Facebook page, with many turning up for yesterday’s direct action.
Stacey Parker, 28, said: “I don’t know Tracy, but I would be absolutely devastated in her situation.”
Mrs Brewster has lost her job as a housekeeper since Marmie disappeared and now spends her time putting up posters.
She said: “I just want Marmie to come home, I can’t sleep at night and I get so tearful every time I talk about it.”
The campaign has also attracted support from poet Pam Ayres, 67, and Made In Chelsea star Lucy Watson, 23.
