Ed Sheeran has invited the Ipswich Town football team for a night out to celebrate the club being promoted to the Premier League.

The Suffolk-born singer-songwriter, who sponsors the club’s football shirts, shared a video on Instagram of him getting up early in Miami to watch the team beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 during their home game at Portman Road on Saturday.

In a video, the pop star can be seen celebrating the victory before calling up the players in their dressing room to ask if they would like to “go out” with him when he returns to the UK on Wednesday.

When asked by a player where he was, he joked: “I’m in Miami, I’ve got pay for the sponsorship somehow.”

Alongside the video, Sheeran wrote on Instagram: “Back to back promotions for @ipswichtown. Very emotional.

“It wasn’t that long ago I was sat at Portman Road watching them lose in League One with 11k people watching.

“This is huge for the club, huge for the town, and huge for football, showing anything can happen with belief and passion.

“Congrats to all the players, people at the club, and of course super Kieran.

“Sorry I can’t be there to celebrate but we don’t want another betting company as the sponsor next season eh. Uppa town. Emotional. See you in the Prem.”

Musical duo Jedward were among the famous faces to offer their congratulations to Sheeran, writing: “What a childhood moment Ipswich are back baby remember having the shiny crest in the sticker book congratulations.”

Ipswich will play in the top league for the first time since 2002.
