When Heather Montgomery and Jordan Cuff tied the knot, they had a surprise announcement for their guests. And they decided to break their big news in a novel way.

The couple gave their 12 guests scratch cards and asked them to scrape off the foil, which revealed the magic words: “We’re having a baby!”

Heather, 24, an early learning practitioner, said: “Everyone cheered and clapped. It was a really lovely moment.

“We then placed a picture of our first baby scan at the ceremony.

“It had been taken the day before our wedding on September 26.”

The couple are overjoyed to discover that their baby is due on what would be the anniversary of their first wedding date, April 4, which they had cancelled due to lockdown.

“We hit on the idea of telling our guests after I saw the scratch cards online. I think most people keep them for family parties and I guess using them at a wedding is pretty novel.”

Jordan, 26, a chef, said: “We are so happy at the news that we are going to be parents. The scratch cards were a great way to tell everyone.”

The couple’s humanist wedding celebrant, Maureen Kettle, said she had never seen anything like it at a wedding.

She said: “It was a lovely idea. The couple asked everyone to open their scratch cards and a big cheer went right through the room.

“It was such a lovely day and everyone was so happy for them.”

Heather revealed that she had to buy a new dress for the ceremony.

“Let’s say, it was more comfortable. Getting married during Covid can be as romantic even with all the social distancing, and wearing masks,” she said.

“What’s important is that you love each other, and news of our new baby just added to our joy.

“Everything worked out perfectly.”
