Weather: Scotland to bask in sunshine over bank holiday weekend

SCOTLAND is set to see the best of the bank holiday weekend sunshine.

While temperatures may not reach the heights of down south, conditions will be clearest north of the border and in Northern Ireland.

Warm and sunny spells will be accompanied by the mercury rising to the mid 20s.

And parts of the Scotland could reach as high as 26ºC, with the fine conditions set to last into next week.

It’s the result of high pressure combined with warm air from Europe and the jet stream heading north.

Senior Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: “Warm conditions will last well into next week.

“For the next day or so, the west coast will be largely clear while the east coast could be a bit cloudy, with a haar in some areas.

“On Friday, there will be plenty of high cloud and this will all burn away by the weekend, leading to some really bright, dry and warm conditions.”

Down south, there are warnings of thunderstorms as temperatures peak close to 30ºC.

It could be one of the hottest bank holidays on record, with the warmest being May 29 1944.

On that day, temperatures of a scorching 32.8ºC were recorded in Sussex, Kent and London.

St. James Park, London currently holds the record for the warmest day of the year in 2018, with 29.1ºC recorded on 19th April.

Although the UK record may not be broken, the sunny and warm conditions could see Northern Ireland come close to record Bank Holiday temperatures.

The current record for Northern Ireland is 25.2ºC, set in 1978 in Strabane.

Not everywhere will stay dry however, with the risk of scattered heavy and thundery showers in some places.

Chief Meteorologist Andy Page said, “There is a risk of potentially severe thunderstorms during the Bank Holiday weekend. These are most likely to affect the south and southwest of the country, however exact location details are uncertain at this stage.”
