THERESA MAY has revealed that the “naughtiest thing” she has ever done was to run through fields of wheat as a child.

The Prime Minister, who described herself as a “bookish” only child, said the farmers “weren’t too pleased” about her exploits when pressed on what was the naughtiest thing she had ever done.

In an interview with ITV’s Julie Etchingham, due to air tonight, Mrs May said her father’s death in a car accident had been “a tremendous shock” but support from her husband Philip and the wider community had helped her cope with the loss.

Asked about her childhood exploits, she struggled to find a response, saying: “Oh goodness me. Well I suppose, gosh, do you know I’m not quite sure.

“Nobody is ever perfectly behaved, are they?

“I have to confess when me and my friends used to run through the fields of wheat, the farmers weren’t too pleased about that.”

Mrs May, describing her childhood, said: “Well, of course you can’t get away from the fact that I was a vicar’s daughter.

“I think I was a child, I was quite, sort of, bookish as a child, I enjoyed going to school, I enjoyed reading books, I enjoyed learning.

“I was an only child, so of course I didn’t have brothers and sisters who I was playing with and so I obviously had friends but sometimes had to just go out and, sort of, do things on my own.”

Tonight: The Leader Interviews – Theresa May is on ITV at 7.30pm on Tuesday, June 6
