Sir Kenny Dalglish: There’s every reason to fancy Rangers for Europa League semis

Ryan Kent celebrates scoring against Red Star

Ryan Kent’s goal for Rangers against Red Star Belgrade came at the perfect time.

After a one-two with Glen Kamara, it carried a wee bit of luck as the ball crossed the line for the equaliser.

But when these things are going for you, then you cash in. There is no need to apologise.

Over the 180 minutes against the Serbian outfit, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men deserved to win the tie, and now they face Sporting Braga in the quarter-finals.

In some respects, you could say the draw has been kind to the Light Blues by giving them the Portuguese, who are currently lying fourth in their domestic championship.

But, remember, they knocked out Monaco, who are no mugs.

In Carlos Carvalhal, they have a manager who knows his stuff. Tactically he is astute, and he’s good at man-management.

So we could say he is very similar to van Bronckhorst.

In European football this season, the Dutchman has displayed his willingness to adapt, and make substitutions at crucial times.

I like the way Giovanni has got Alfredo Morelos really going again, and also has Kent looking very hungry.

Both will be important in the next two European games, and there is every reason to fancy Rangers to get into the semi-finals.

It’s also great to see West Ham United there.

Led by Davie Moyes, they performed tremendously well against Sevilla, and it was some achievement to see off the Spaniards.

Davie has been a top manager for more than 15 years, and it looks as though the best may still be to come.
