STEVEN GERRARD’S appointment as Rangers manager has made headlines worldwide.

The former Liverpool and England captain was announced as the Ibrox club’s new manager this afternoon.

He signed a four-yeal-deal in his first senior management role.

France Football reported: “Steven Gerrard set himself the challenge of sustaining the reconstruction of the club”

Belgium’s RTL wrote: “It’s official: Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard will start his coaching career in Scotland.”

The Times of India said: “The 37-year-old faces a huge challenge to compete with bitter rivals Celtic for domestic dominance in Scotland.”

Spain’s AS said of Gerrard coming up against Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic: “Without doubt, it will be the great rivalry that Gerrard will face and on the bench is Brendan Rodgers, his last coach at Liverpool.”

Mexican outlet Futbol Picante was delighted at the prospect of Gerrard managing Eduardo Herrera and Carlos Pena, although admitting: “The first has not had activity since February 11 of this year and the second was on loan at Cruz Azul, but because of his indisciplines he would return to Scotland.”

ESPN’s Colombia football site Balo Dividido said: “The Buffalo Alfredo Morelos will now be under the orders of Liverpool’s historic player Steven Gerrard.”

NTV Spor of Turkey’s headline translates to: “Glasgow Rangers entrusted to Steven Gerrard.”

Back home, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers expressed his delight at the prospect of coming up against Gerrard next season.

Rodgers’ side are going for an unprecedented successive treble and are unbeaten in 11 games against the Gers during a current spell of Old Firm domination.

Speaking at Lennoxtown ahead of the trip to play Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday, the Northern Irishman said: “I haven’t spoken to him, I left him be when I saw he was linked with it, he will obviously have his own thoughts on it.

“So I have let him be. But I am delighted for him because he has obviously had an incredible playing career, wanted to manage, wanted to coach and now he gets the opportunity to do that.”

On Twitter, Gary Lineker said: “Wish Steven Gerrard all the very best with Rangers. If he’s even half as good a manager as he was a player, he’ll be triumphant. Been great working with him on the telly. Smart, knowledgeable and driven.”
