Steven Gerrard confronts referee John Beaton on the pitch at Livingston

There is no doubt John Beaton made a mistake when he booked Alfredo Morelos for simulation last Wednesday night.

The Rangers striker was fouled by Livingston keeper Max Stryjek, and a penalty should have been awarded.

Understandably, Steven Gerrard was angry, and made his feelings known to the referee at half-time, which resulted in two yellow cards and Steven being sent to the stand.

In my opinion, it’s commendable for Steven to stand up for his players. That’s the way it should be.

He was offered a one-match ban from the technical area, and he accepted it.

Nothing is likely to happen to the referee, but Steven would not be looking for John to be punished.

He is just looking for some kind of acknowledgement that a mistake was made.

There’s nothing wrong with that. It just needs to all be tidied up in a mature manner, and with commonsense at the heart of it all.

The pleasing factor from Wednesday, for Steven, would have been that Alfredo stayed focused and went on to score the winning goal.

The Colombian striker is really looking the part right now, and is very much a team player.

That is a sign he is maturing very well, and listening to the instructions and guidance behind the scenes at Ibrox.

I have a feeling there is more to come from him in the remaining weeks of the season.
