My Favourite Holiday: Don’t be sniffy about laid-back Alicante, says TV’s David Bull

DAVID BULL, a qualified doctor, has been appearing on shows such as Watchdog, Holiday, Most Haunted, Sugar Dome and The Wright Stuff on TV for more than 20 years.

Suffolk-born David, 48, now lives in London but spent a while living and working on the other side of the Atlantic.

David is one of the presenters of Coast Versus Country, which goes out on Channel 4 on weekday afternoons.

I’VE travelled the world and had some great holidays, but my all-time favourite has to be Spain.

I’m lucky enough to have a house there and that’s where I’m at my happiest.

There’s such a brilliant “mañana” attitude, that no one cares and it’s all about siestas, family and food!

It’s such a laid-back lifestyle and there’s nothing better than just lazing by the pool. The house is in a lovely village on the Costa Blanca called Finestrat.

It’s one of those typical villages built – to keep invaders out I guess – on a sheer rock face.

Getting there is easy as you fly in to Alicante and there are so many airlines you can get a cheap deal and just drop in for the weekend.

And while the village is lovely, pretty and quiet, it’s just a short drive from Benidorm.

That’s a place that people have such a wrong impression about. Yes, the TV series does represent a bit of the town, but only a small part.

It’s a really big place with a fabulous old town, great beaches and something for absolutely everyone. Some people are unfairly sniffy about it.

I lived in Los Angeles for six years and that’s a fantastic place for a holiday – but it can be a lonely place.

I had some very memorable moments including being with Orlando Bloom and having dinner with Cameron Diaz.

I spent a long time going to these crazy celebrity restaurants, but it’s all very Disney and unreal.

If I had to pick another place it’d be Palm Springs, which is both a lovely place to have a holiday but also to retire to.

Being in the desert, it’s never cold. The winter is wonderful, always around 24 degrees.

There’s a nice sense of community, golf clubs, an oasis and you’re only two hours from LA in the car.

In the summer it’s too hot and you have to get out, so it works beautifully for spending summers in Europe and winters over there.
