Edinburgh has beaten cities like New York, Chicago, Berlin and Amsterdam to be named the best city in the world to visit in 2022.

Scotland’s capital city came out top in Time Out magazine’s fifth annual Time Out Index, described as the ‘most beautiful’ and ‘most walkable’ city on earth right now.

The city was also praised for its encouragement of self-expression, with 88% of locals saying it’s easy to be who you are in Edinburgh – something something that’s celebrated every summer with the Edinburgh Fringe Festivals.

Glasgow also did very well on the list, coming in at number four out of the 53 rated cities.

It was awarded ‘friendliest city in the world’ for 2022, and the second most affordable.

Its two Michelin-star restaurants were also mentioned as was its nightlife.

The earth is reflected in the River Clyde at the SEC in Glasgow ahead of Cop26 in 2021.

Every year, Time Out, the global media and hospitality business – surveys  thousands of city-dwellers around the world about life in their hometown right now.

Using their responses, Time Out compiles its annual ranking of the world’s best cities, in order to point people in the direction of the places which locals are raving about.

Last year, the list focused on how cities have pulled together through the pandemic, in particular when it comes to community spirit and resilience.

This year, Time Out said people are itching to get back out there after being locked down or halted from travelling. So for the 2022 ranking, the organisation has added extra weight to the things that make cities great places to visit as well as to live.

For 2022, eating and drinking, art, culture, museums, and nightlife were all highlighted places that locals rate highly for fun and for beauty and aren’t boring, overly expensive or overrated.
