ALFREDO MORELOS scored a brace as Rangers ran riot to reach the quarter-finals of the Betfred Cup with a 6-0 demolition of Dunfermline.

Kenny Miller had already given Pedro Caixinha’s side the lead at Ibrox before former Porto defender Bruno Alves opened his Rangers account with a free-kick in the ninth minute.

Morelos, a summer signing from HJK, grabbed his first goal for the club midway through the first half and James Tavernier put the hosts 4-0 up after 27 minutes.

Ladbrokes Championship side Dunfermline fell further behind when Daniel Candeias added a 57th-minute free-kick – his maiden Rangers strike – and Morelos rounded off the victory after 75 minutes.

Paul McGowan scored a second-half winner as Dundee beat Dundee United 2-1 to reach the last-eight stage.

Championship side Dundee United beat their city rivals on penalties in the group stage after a 1-1 draw at Dens Park in July but they could not repeat the feat on Wednesday.

Faissal El Bakhtaoui opened the scoring for Premiership outfit Dundee with a stunning volley which crashed in off the crossbar on the half-hour mark.

However, the visitors were level within 10 minutes when Billy King slotted home Sam Stanton’s cross at the back post.

Neil McCann’s troops found the winner midway through the second half, though, when McGowan slotted home from around 18 yards.

Aberdeen, last season’s runners-up, also made a safe passage into the quarter-finals as Kenny McLean’s first-half goal sealed a 1-0 triumph at Hamilton.

Elsewhere, 10-man Motherwell beat Ross County 3-2 after extra-time at Dingwall.

Gael Bigirimana put Motherwell in front early in the second half only for Alex Schalk to level for County after 65 minutes.

The visitors restored their advantage two minutes into extra-time through Chris Cadden but Craig Curran equalised from the penalty spot after 104 minutes.

Charles Dunne saw red for handling the ball on the line in conceding the spot-kick but it did not hamper Well, who secured the win in the 112th minute when Ross MacLean struck.
