YOUTUBE is where many of us go when we’re bored and want to while away the time watching videos of cats, clips of concerts or tutorials on how to do almost everything.

But what videos were the most viewed on the site in 2016?

As part of their annual Rewind campaign, YouTube have revealed what’s been watched the most on their site in the past 12 months – and here are some of the highlights.

Carpool karaoke

James Corden has proved a big hit since he moved stateside to take over from Scot Craig Ferguson as host of The Late Late Show.

One of the most popular segments of his show is ‘Carpool Karaoke’, where he gives a famous singer a lift and the two perform their biggest hits.

Megastars like Justin Bieber, Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Lady Gaga have all been in the passenger seat, but with 135 million views this year, Adele is the queen of YouTube!

Buster the Boxer

This one was uniquely popular here in the UK,  where the John Lewis Christmas advert being unveiled is one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the festive period.

This year was no exception, and the bounding joy of Buster the boxer on the trampoline had viewers captivated once again.

Another UK hit, this clip from Britain’s Got Talent has been viewed almost 49 million times.

Simon Cowell pressed his Golden Buzzer for this Stormtrooper dance outfit, who came third in this year’s series of the variety talent show.

Singing impressions

Joe Thatcher is one of the many ‘YouTubers’ who have amassed hundreds of thousands of followers from the video content they produce.

Here he teams up with singer Conor Maynard to perform some hilarious, and very impressive, impressions.

Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen

Sometimes it’s the most bizarre videos that prove the biggest hits.

This baffling tune has received over 98 million views… and we’re not sure why.

It is strangely fascinating, though…

What’s inside a rattlesnake’s rattle?

Here’s an educational one.

What started as a school project has grown into a hugely popular channel where a father and son duo cut things open to see what’s inside.

In this clip, they investigate the insides of a dead rattlesnake.

As you do.

Water bottle flip

Kids in playgrounds across the country have been trying out the water bottle flip challenge, where you spin the bottle up into the air and try to get it to land perfectly upright.

A group of five friends going by the name Dude Perfect take it to another level with these extreme bottle flipping stunts.

First class ticket

YouTube star Casey Neistat somehow wangled an upgrade on his 14-hour flight from Dubai to New York with Emirates Airlines and filmed the results.

It’s a journey that would have cost over $21,000 dollars!

The unique insight into how the other half live had millions of viewers watching jealously at the five star food, luxury freebies and the gold plated everything…

Nike’s big Switch

In this advert for sportswear giants Nike, Cristiano Ronaldo clashes heads with a ball-boy and the pair’s lives are dramatically changed.

As a result of the collision, they switch bodies and have to live the lives of each other until they finally meet again with the ballboy now a fully-fledged England international.

The advert also stars England’s Harry Kane, Joe Hart and Raheem Sterling.
