Ross King: 2016 was a punch in the face… all thanks to Gerard Butler!

WELL 2016 was a bit of a memorable year, wasn’t it?

Forget all the celebrities that died, all the Hollywood relationships that failed and all the massive movies that came out.

No, last year will always be remembered as the one that Gerard Butler and I knocked lumps out of each other on the telly.

The year started off on a really awful note though. There was no one like him before, and I’m not sure there’ll be another like him again.

Can you believe David Bowie died nearly 12 months ago? The first single I ever bought was The Jean Genie back in 1972.

I remember going to see the Thin White Duke at the Apollo in Glasgow at the height of his popularity in the ’70s, and then also at Murrayfield Stadium in 1983.

I had one brief meeting with the man himself – and I was so star-struck all I could say was: “Mr Bowie, I’m a huge fan.”

The madness of the awards season was next for me. One of my favourite tales from the red carpet was meeting Sacha Baron Cohen and his missus Isla Fisher.

They told me he smuggled in his Ali G gear and got changed in the toilets – the Oscar folk had no idea!

I was also lucky enough to interview the brilliant Elton John, and he opened up about his love for his two sons. What an enjoyable chat we had.

Then there were my chats with Gerry Butler.

The big Paisley beefcake meets the wee Knightswood cheesecake.

Gerry was one of the best men at my wedding last year – so who could have predicted he’d land a punch on me during an interview about his London Has Fallen movie?

It was all a bit of a laugh – there was no need for Gerry to insist on 12 takes to get it right though.

I got my own back at the Toronto Film Festival in September when I hit Gerry with my own sucker-punch.

As well as celebrity deaths, there were some celebrity break-ups.

Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris. Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston. Taylor Swift and… has anyone checked what she’s up to this week?

Forget Brexit – 2016 was the year of Braxpitt, when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie sadly called time on their relationship.

Then there was the biggest showbiz shock of the year – a reality TV host became the most powerful man in the world.

Never mind Trump – I thought Simon Cowell already had that job?
