Testing time for Coronation Street’s Carla

Corrie’s love triangle takes a little twist this week a baby-sized twist.

While Peter (Chris Gascoyne) has been getting all hot and steamy with temptress Tina (Michelle Keegan), his new missus Carla (Alison King) has some bombshell news.

A pregnancy test will eventually deliver the hammer blow. Carla starts to have her suspicions, which she shares with Kym Marsh’s Michelle, while Tina’s talking to Steph about a “friend” who’s having an affair.

And the death of Carla’s stepdad George only further complicates things.

“Carla has no clue that Peter’s having an affair,” confirms Alison.

“Peter’s very good at covering and he’s had enough affairs in the past to be able to hide his tracks. Carla always seems to have had something else on her mind to deter her from suspicion.

“Before Christmas it was the wedding, after that she had to cope with Hayley’s death and now she’s discovered her stepdad has died.

“She’s also worried she might be pregnant, so Carla’s certainly had enough to occupy her mind and take her eye off the ball recently. I think if she was worried about anything it would be Peter falling off the wagon and drinking again.

“Peter is the love of Carla’s life, so I don’t think she could ever take herself back to where she’d start questioning his every move.”

Carla’s concerns over being pregnant start just a few days after she returns from Paris and they’ve spent the night at a hotel together.

While hard-headed business decisions can be made in a flash by the character Alison has played for eight years, making up her mind over taking a test is something else altogether.

“She can’t get her head around it,” says the 41-year-old actress. She’s afraid in case it’s positive and she has to decide what to do. She’s never believed herself maternal.

“Perhaps she feels that because her mum failed her, she will fail at being a mum, too. Carla knows what she’s good at. She’s good at business and that’s as much as she can see.”

So, when she gets the news she’s been fearing, Carla is devastated. With Tina set to be killed off in one of Corrie’s biggest stories for ages in just a couple of months, Carla’s at the top of the bookies’ suspect shortlists.

“She’d be crushed if she found out about the affair and want to get hold of Tina for sure,” adds Alison.
