Tesla owner whacks raised Model X falcon door in careless garage act

Footage has emerged showing the moment a careless Tesla driver backed a Model X out of a garage with one of its ‘falcon doors’ open — resulting in disaster.

The car is seen stationary with both its rear doors open. The right-side unit is closed before the journey, but the driver doesn’t appear to have spotted the one still open on the other side.

Reversing out, the open door then makes contact with a wall surrounding the garage exit — seemingly sustaining damage in the process. The driver quickly comes to a stop, with a child heard crying in the background — possibly startled by the incident.

It appears the driver then attempts to close the door electronically from inside the car, but is met by an audible warning to signal it’s not possible as a result of the damage.

‘Falcon doors’ on the Tesla Model X get their name from the unconventional way of opening, hinged at the top and lifting up. A more common name for this type of door is ‘Gullwing’, usually associated with the classic Mercedes-Benz 300SL and later the SLS it inspired.

Although not a direct fault of the car, it appears this type of accident is not uncommon among Model X owners. Other videos online show similar crashes, while one user on online forum Tesla Motors Club claimed a repair centre said it would take nine weeks to receive the parts from the American car manufacturer to repair damage cause to the door.
