Murder in Walford? Just don’t ask Hetti Bywater whodunnit!

EastEnders bosses hope it’ll be the question on everyone’s lips for the next 10 months “Who killed Lucy Beale?”

But if you really want to know there’s no point in asking actress Hetti Bywater, who plays wild child Lucy.

She insists she hasn’t a clue and says working out whodunnit has become a Walford pastime.

“I thought I was 100% sure that I had sussed it out in my head but, after talking to everyone else on the cast, I’m not sure anymore,” reveals Hetti.

“Everyone’s having little bets and coming up with their own theories.”

Hetti was given advance notice about her character’s spectacular murderous exit. And she says keeping mum, especially around Jacqueline Jossa, who plays Lauren Branning, was tough.

“It was so difficult,” admits Hetti. “I’d known for about five months before it came out.

“It felt like as soon as I knew suddenly everyone was coming up and asking me what my storylines were and where our characters would be in a couple of years’ time.

“I had to make things up in my head. The hardest person to keep it from was Jacqueline as we always talk about what we’re going to do in the future.”

The BBC soap hasn’t had the best of times, ratings-wise, of late.

And producers hope this storyline which will run right up until the show’s 30th Anniversary next February will really grip viewers.

They’ll be keeping a close eye on the fortunes of big rivals Coronation Street, which will have its own whodunnit soon by bumping off Michelle Keegan’s Tina.

This week sees troubled Lucy’s cocaine stash discovered by dad Ian as she spends the night with Lee.

And soon after heading off alone, her lifeless body is discovered on the Common.

“I think it’s such a big deal for viewers because not only is Lucy a character that’s been in the show for 20 years, the whole of the Beale clan is iconic,” says Hetti, who took over the role in 2012.

“That’s why it makes a big impact. It’s going to be a great story for the Beales and start a new dark chapter for them.

“That’s what the focus is going to be on. It’s not going to be so much about the death, it’s going to be about the implications of it.”

Hetti says she was “ecstatic” about being given such a huge storyline, but the long filming shoots took their toll.

“Working 12 hours every day was draining but it helped me get into character. I was the grumpiest person on set!”
