The centenary of the First World War is gripping the nation.
Broadcasters are planning wall-to-wall coverage marking 100 years since the start of what was supposed to be the war to end all wars. And special events, memorials and concerts are being staged throughout the country.
One that’s set to stir emotions is being held at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall in June.
To mark the centenary, the tri-service bands of the Royal Marines, Royal Regiment of Scotland and the Pipes and Drums from RAF Leuchars are presenting a Proms-style concert.
The bands will play a selection of military marches, including Army of the Nile, Sarie Marais and Suppe’s Light Cavalry. There will be a selection of “Songs That Won The War” and also a Big Band section with guest singer Gary Chilton.
The stunning finale will include The Gael, from Last of the Mohicans, Amazing Grace and the traditional Sunset.
Captain Andy Gregory of the Royal Marines band was one of those who came up with what promises to be “an evening of pomp, ceremony and colour.”
Andy said: “The opportunity to bring together the combined talents of the three Service bands in Scotland is too good to miss.
“This concert is going to be a great way to start Armed Forces Week in Edinburgh as well as to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1 this summer. If it works, we’ll look to make in at annual event.”
Proceeds will go to Seafarers UK, The Soldiers Charity and the RAF Benevolent Fund.
The Armed Forces Edinburgh Proms Concert takes place on June 19. Tickets available from the Usher Hall.
