Janet Tough My Favourite Holiday

The Krankies and John Barrowman open next Saturday in Cinderalla at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow. It runs until January 4.

The pairing have been pulling in panto fans for the last five years.

It’ll be 50 years next year since Ian and Janette Tough first met at Glasgow’s Pavilion Theatre. The couple, both 67, now live in Torquay but spend four months of every year at their apartment on Australia’s Gold Coast.

Janette, or Wee Jimmy Krankie, shares her magical holiday memories.

“When I was a kid my dad had a caravan and we used to do different sites in Scotland.

“I remember we went down to Paignton one year, before there were really motorways.

“You’d be away for a fortnight and spent half the time getting there the first night we probably made it as far as Preston.

“We’ve had a place in Australia for 14 years now and made that our main holiday base.

“We worked in the country for many years and that’s why we bought it. It’s about 25 miles from where they film I’m A Celebrity.

“It’s their autumn when we go over. The temperature is about 30 degrees and the sea 25 degrees.

“Our lifestyle is completely different over there. Usually we’ll get up about 7am and Ian will cycle to the shop to get the milk.

“There are cycle paths along the beach and up the Tweed River.

“They’re proper wide paths, not the wee bits you get on the side of roads in this country.

“So we’ll maybe cycle in the mornings, have a bit of lunch and go down to the beach for a swim, or play a bit of golf.

“We’ll go to bed earlier at night as it’s very much a daytime country. It’s the friendliest place in the world.

“We looked at different places before we bought, including Perth which was lovely but too isolated. You’d drive to the end of it and there was nothing for 800 miles.

“Because we’ve got a beach in Australia we’re more inclined to go on city breaks for other holidays now.

“We had a lovely time in the Italian Lakes this year.

“It was my friend’s 60th and she was talking about going to New York, but I’m really glad we went to Italy.

“We stayed in Milan and then went to Stresa. The food was just amazing.

“And we also went to Alicante this year. I’d thought it was just an airport but we really liked the city. Barcelona’s another that we’re fond of.

“I think when we worked the cruise ships we must have seen about every city along the coast in Europe.

“But we love them and if we get a chance we’ll go away and do a five-day city break rather than go to the beach.”
