Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding kept quiet about new Coronation Street role

New Corrie star Sarah Harding has plenty to say as feisty new Weatherfield arrival Joni.

But keeping her lips sealed was the difficult bit for the Girls Aloud singer when she heard she’d landed the role.

“I only told my mum and my fella and swore them to secrecy,” says Sarah.

“I was bursting to speak about it as I was so honoured to have a part in this programme so it was hard keeping it quiet.

“I was a bit overwhelmed with it but so excited at the same time.”

Sarah’s role in the national institution came about after she was on the set working for breakfast telly.

“I was here last year doing a film with Good Morning Britain and everyone saw that I was a really big fan of the show,” explains the 33-year-old.

“I was running around getting my photo taken on set. I asked them if they ever did cameo appearances and they knew I’d done some acting. That was how it started.”

Sarah obviously made a big impression as the love rival current wife of the first husband of Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford).

Her initial four-episode guest-star role has been extended to give her a longer stay on the cobbles.

And she says her first day on set is one she’ll never forget.

“I was filming with Kate, who is the complete opposite of her character,” she adds.

“It was nerve- racking as we were filming on location and there were a lot of paparazzi.

“There was a lot to learn and I had to give her a good slap. “Every time they shouted: ‘Cut!’ I’d giggle because Kate was so lovely.”
