Postman Pat film at ‘spiritual home’

Pat’s red letter day!

Some people will turn up to the opening of an envelope but it was no surprise crowds flocked to the Lake District to see their favourite postie.

Actor Stephen Mangan, was the star attraction at the gala premiere of Postman Pat The Movie at Kendal’s Brewery Arts Centre yesterday, alongside a life-sized version of the Pat, who was sporting cool shades in the bright afternoon sun.

Mangan, who voices the postman in the film, was joined by scores of lucky youngsters for a preview of the film ahead of its release next weekend.

Kendal is known as the spiritual home of Postman Pat because author John Cunliffe was living in the area when he created the series 33 years ago.

And Stephen, who has sons aged three and six, was excited to appear in a film which his whole family can enjoy.

He said: “Most of the stuff I’ve been involved with is adult-themed, so it was a huge relief to be offered something that’s aimed squarely at their age group.”

The comic actor said his children had been a little confused to hear their dad’s voice coming from Pat’s mouth when they saw the recent London premiere but soon warmed to the idea of their dad being Pat.

Stephen added: “He was the nicest character on TV, growing up. It’s a very innocent world.”

As well as Mangan playing Pat the film also features the voices of Jim Broadbent, Rupert Grint and David Tennant.
