Call The Midwife fans are left nun the wiser!

Call The Midwife may be telly’s hottest drama but Scots actress Laura Main knows how to avoid being spotted by its nine million fans she just has to keep away from the rest of the cast.

Aberdeenshire girl Laura has been with the show since the start but was little recognised behind the nun’s habit of Sister Bernadette.

When she abandoned her life as a nun to marry GP Dr Turner, though, she thought she’d be spotted a lot more.

“There’s been absolutely no difference,” laughs Laura. “The other girls get noticed and I thought it’d be interesting to see how it changed but it didn’t in the slightest.

“I met one of the writers on a new job who’s a big fan of the show. It was only after a couple of hours that it came up that I was in Call The Midwife and he just hadn’t twigged.

“The only time I ever get any recognition is when I’m out with the likes of Bryony or Helen. They get spotted and then I do.”

Laura admits it was just as strange for her to adapt to her new clothes and hairstyle as it was for the viewers.

While happiness came with finding love with her doc, there’s been heartache with the discovery that TB has left Shelagh unable to have kids.

“I got told quite early on what they had planned for the character and I was really pleased we were touching on this subject,” confides Laura.

“The show is full of births but some women who want to can’t have a family. Medically it’s different now from the 1950s but there are still people who can’t, which is awful.

“I think a huge part of her giving up being a nun was the desire to have a family, so it’s a very sad storyline. But the great thing about the series is that it covers all sorts of tough subjects.

“We had one storyline this series about a girl with Down’s Syndrome who was having a baby. I feel particularly proud to have been a part of that script.”

Laura has had to work on her time management to fit in seeing actor boyfriend Stephen McGlynn, with whom she shares a home in London.

“He’s been in Mamma Mia in theatre, so we have very different schedules,” adds Laura, who gets back to Scotland as often as she can. But we’re both in things we love so we work round it.”

Call The Midwife, BBC1, Sunday, 8pm.
