Rangers caretaker boss will never forget Ugo Ehiogu Old Firm goal

Kenny McDowall’s favourite Old Firm memory in his time at Rangers was Ugo Ehiogu scoring a spectacular overhead kick.

And the caretaker manager is hoping one of his current charges can make themselves the hero when they face Celtic in next weekend’s League Cup semi-final showdown.

This could be McDowall’s one and only match as manager in an Old Firm game and he’d like it to be memorable for the right reasons.

“The one which sticks out is probably the first one where Ugo Ehiogu scored with an overhead kick,” said McDowall as he considered his most- memorable moment in derby matches he has been involved in.

“That was my first game going back as a coach and it was a great game as we won 1-0 in 2007. It was an incredible goal to win it and we were underdogs that day as well.

“It has been said a thousand times, form goes out the window and you have got to turn up on the day you just hope it is your day.”

Despite being huge underdogs, McDowall will still be able to call upon the services of several players who have Old Firm experience to draw on.

Captain Lee McCulloch, Lee Wallace, Stevie Smith, Richard Foster, Kenny Miller, Kris Boyd and Kyle Hutton are all first-team stars who have sampled the red-hot atmosphere before.

But there are a number of players on both sides who will be making their debuts and the caretaker boss knows every player will be feeling the heat.

He said: “It is a funny one if you look at the two squads there aren’t a lot who have played in them. It is different because of that.

“There is a lot of anticipation about this game but and anyone who hasn’t played in it before should be busting to play in it.

“I think it will be a fantastic occasion. It has been three years and it has finally arrived.

“It will be massive because it has been so long but this is what you are in the game for. You want to take part in games as big as this and I am looking forward to it.”
