Fun-loving 90-year-old celebrates his birthday by going clubbing with his pals until 3am

“Apparently I got home about 3.45am but I don’t really remember!”

George Harrison ended up in a nightclub more commonly frequented by music-loving teenagers and 20-somethings.

And the old timer has admitted he didn’t make it home until the wee small hours after his impromptu night on the tiles at Chancers in Dumfries.

Despite the late hour of his arrival home, gallivanting George had a great time.

“I did like the music at Chancers, though,” he said. “It had a good beat. But I think youngsters are missing out because, in my opinion, there’s nothing like grabbing a partner for a Viennese waltz or a quickstep.”

The Second World War veteran met with a group of friends to celebrate his birthday last week. They were planning to have a few pints and then head home.

George had other ideas and decided to head to the popular town centre disco.

He said: “It’s not a place I would usually frequent but we had a good time. We had a meeting on Thursday night and a few quiet birthday drinks afterwards, then one thing led to another and we ended up at Chancers. I was definitely the oldest in the club but it was a great night, apparently I got home about 3.45am but I don’t really remember!”

George, who lives in the Broomlands area of the town, likes to keep himself forever young by frequenting the dance floor. However, he did admit the music had changed a tad since his disco dancing heyday as had the hip and happening moves.

He said: “It’s important to keep active and do things for yourself. I was a good mover in my day but we didn’t dance much the other night because it’s not as easy when you get to 90.”

One Chancers regular who was there while George was having a boogie said he was “quite a mover”.

Supermarket worker Clare Galightly, 27, said: “Good on him. Just because he’s 90 doesn’t mean he has to be tucked up in bed with his cocoa.

“I think a lot of people in the club thought ‘more lead to your pencil’.”
