Rockin’ in the rain at Rewind

The weather failed to dampen the spirits of revellers at the fourth annual Rewind Festival in Perthshire.

The popular ’80s music event returned to Scone Palace yesterday for a sell-out weekend. Although the damp conditions stayed stubbornly in place, festival-goers braved the elements to soak up the nostalgia.

Acts including former Haircut 100 frontman Nick Heyward, while Abba tribute band Bjorn Again drew in the crowds. But the biggest cheers were reserved for top-billed acts Jimmy Somerville and Billy Ocean.

Among those dancing in the rain was Denise Thomson from Kirkcaldy, who is enjoying a year-long celebration of her 50th birthday.

She said: “I’ve just come up for the day and I’m really enjoying it so far. The weather hasn’t been bothering us at all we’ve been having an absolute ball, it’s just been a fantastic day.”

She also revealed her colourful wig was a tribute to her own hairstyle back in the 1980s.

“I remember going out like this when I was a youngster,” she added.

The Sugar Hill Gang kicked off proceedings with their popular hit Rapper’s Delight, as well as a cover of Queen’s We Will Rock You. They were followed by Heyward, who worked his magic by playing Haircut 100’s top 10 hit, Fantastic Day.

First-time Rewinders Alan and Kath Cashen praised the atmosphere of the festival. The Carnoustie couple missed out on attending last year as they were on holiday in Cyprus but they hope to return in 2015.

Kath, 60, said: “We’re really enjoying ourselves. We’ve come prepared and brought our waterproofs, so the weather isn’t really bothering us too much.

“It’s been really good to see all the bands from the ’80s back on the stage again and we’ve been enjoying singing along.”

Although he might be too young to remember most of the artists on the line-up, 24-year-old Chris Horsely was enjoying his first experience at Rewind.

He travelled from Dundee for the weekend with a group of friends, who got into the spirit by donning retro outfits.

He added: “This has just been great so far and I reckon I’ll be back next year.”

Thankfully for those heading to Rewind today the forecast is much brighter.

Highlights for the final day of the festival include the Boomtown Rats, T’Pau, Marc Hall and a rare appearance by Philadelphia duo Daryl Hall and John Oates.
