THE leader of a prominent white nationalist group was met with Nazi salutes after he praised President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in the US election.
Richard Spencer, president of the alt-right National Policy Institute (NPI), took to the stage for the white nationalist think-tank’s annual conference in Washington DC to deliver a chilling speech – a video of which was released by news site The Atlantic, which is making a documentary about Spencer.
In his speech Spencer denounces the mainstream media, calling them the “Lugenpresse” with a wry smile. The German word literally translates to “lying press” and was used by the Nazis to discredit the media.
“The press has clearly decided to double down and wage war against the legitimacy of Trump and the continued existence of white America,” says Spencer. “America was until this past generation a white country designed for ourselves and our posterity. It is our creation, it is our inheritance, and it belongs to us.”
He added: “To be white is to be a striver, a crusader, an explorer and a conqueror. We build, we produce, we go upward. We don’t exploit other groups, we don’t gain anything from their presence – they need us and not the other way around.”
Spencer has popularised the term “alt-right” to describe people who have right and far-right beliefs and reject mainstream US conservatism.
The NPI leader has also in the past called Martin Luther King Jr a “fraud and degenerate” and called immigration a “proxy war” that will cause America to become “alien and hostile”.
Trump’s immigration policy in particular has faced criticism and following his surprise defeat of Hillary Clinton in November’s US election concerns have frequently been raised over the support his campaign received from white supremacist groups.
As well as the NPI the Ku Klux Klan has also been vocal about their support for a Trump presidency.
