A paedophile has been let off with a caution for selling Rose West-related merchandise on eBay.

Sex offender George Galloway was selling a prison canteen jail receipt which contained confidential information about West on the online auction site.

Galloway was working in the canteen of Low Newton Prison, near Durham, where West is being held, when he swiped the receipt.

The item required a starting bid of £300. He was selling it from his cell when he was caught.

Cleveland Police have revealed Galloway, 50, from Middlesbrough, has been let off with a caution.

Tory MP Philip Davies said: “I can’t understand why on earth this person could do this in the first place.”

The Ministry of Justice launched a major internal investigation after the receipt appeared on eBay in April. The jail’s computer system has now been changed to stop tills generating duplicate receipts.

West was convicted of 10 murders in November 1995 after remains of victims were found at the Cromwell Street “house of horrors” she shared with her partner Fred.

He was set to stand trial for 12 murders but committed suicide aged 53 on January 1, 1995, while on remand in prison. She is serving life.

Galloway, who continues to protest his innocence, was convicted in February 2007 of abusing two girls under the age of 16 between 1996 and 2004.

He is being held at HMP Frankland, which is near womens’ nick, Low Newton. As an earned privilege male inmates can work in the female canteen.

A Cleveland Police spokesman last night confirmed he had been cautioned for taking the receipt.

A spokesman for eBay said the auction listing was removed from the online market place as soon as it was brought to the company’s attention.

He said: “Our offensive materials policy does not allow the sale of offensive items on our site, including those related to criminal activity.”

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice said: “We have reviewed what happened and put measures in place to make sure this does not occur again.”
