It’s entertaining at the foot of the SPL if your head’s not on the block

Last Tuesday Danny Lennon stated that St Mirren have taken a step backwards since he was let go as their manager a year ago.

Having watched the Paisley club comfortably beaten by Motherwell at Fir Park that same night, it is impossible to disagree.

Danny led the Saints to their League Cup win in 2013, their first silverware in 26 years. But at the end of last season, the Buddies Board took the decision not to renew his contract.

It has not worked out for them. The club are heading for the Championship and what is likely to be a very competitive Championship at that.

If we didn’t know it before they lost 5-0 to Motherwell a result that put them 10 points behind their nearest rivals at the foot of the table we certainly know it now.

So Danny can fairly judge himself to have been very unlucky.

Change is, of course, a big part of football.

Five out of the bottom six Premiership teams after the midweek action have different managers from the ones they started the season with.

Derek Adams, Tommy Craig and Allan Johnston were removed from their respective positions at Ross County, St Mirren and Kilmarnock.

Alex Neil quit Hamilton for a new opportunity with Norwich City. Stuart McCall walked out on Motherwell because he felt he could not take the team any further. Only Alan Archibald at Thistle remains in place.

Gary Teale is now the man in charge at St Mirren Park, and he has it tough.

It is never easy making the transition from being a player to a manager.

And it would not be easy for even an experienced boss to deal with the loss of the club’s top scorer in mid-season.

That is what happened to Teale when Aberdeen exercised the clause in Kenny McLean’s contract to take him north for £300,000.

It says it all that, three months on, McLean still heads that list with seven goals to his credit with the next nearest having two.

So who will finish second bottom and go into the play-off. It is between three teams Motherwell, Ross County and Partick Thistle.

Thistle’s superior goal difference is worth an extra point, but they have less positive momentum than the other two, so I am just not sure.

What is certain, though, is that it is terrific entertainment provided, that is, it is not your head that’s the one on the block.
