Sixties legend Twiggy shows middle-aged women the way

Mature women have a lot of living to do.

I’ve grown up with Twiggy. She was my role model in the Sixties, the coolest chick on the block with her tiny mini skirts at the top of those fabulous long legs.

There wasn’t a girl in my class at school who didn’t want to be her. We had our hair cut la Twiggy and we rolled up our navy school skirts at the waistband to copy her style.

So I’m thrilled to see that five decades on, Twiggy has still got it.

Last week the 65-year-old model was named as the latest ambassador for L’Oreal Paris beauty products. She said. “I’m thrilled and I hope to inspire women to be confident and never to be afraid of trying something new.”

I’m with you there, Twiggy. Last week I was on a radio show where the subject was how to stay youthful. An eminent doctor claimed it’s all about vigorous exercise, eating healthily, working out, walking a lot. He also advocated robust sex three times a week.

Really!

True though it may be, I like the easier option. A good moisturiser and a decent face cream does wonders. So whatever is good for Twiggy, I’ll give it a go.

Belatedly, a lot of companies are waking up to the notion that middle-aged women have spending power and the time to enjoy trying out new fashions and new beauty products. We’re not ready yet for wrinkles and mummy twinsets.

We’ve got sexy Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, Jane Fonda and Andie McDowell to prove that mature women have a lot of living to do.

The generation that lived through the Sixties like fun. It inspired our music, our clothes and our outlook.

When I interviewed Jo Wood who was married to Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones she told me, “I like my little lotions and potions. I’ll never give up trying to be the best I can be. “

It’s what feisty women do isn’t it?

So go for it, Twiggy.
