Marcus Collins – from haircuts to Hairspray

The 2011 X Factor runner-up is appearing as Seaweed Stubbs in the UK tour of the smash-hit musical, and he says it’s a dream come true.

“When I was 16 I used to do musical theatre but I never thought I would make it to something like this,” admitted the 24-year-old.

“I’ve watched the original film and also the remake, but I’ve never had the chance to see it in the West End. That’s helped me in a way, because it gave me the chance to come up with my own character rather than seeing someone else in the role.”

The story, set in 1962, follows a Baltimore girl who wins a spot on a local TV dance programme and is transformed from outsider to teen celebrity overnight.

Also starring in the show is Waterloo Road’s Mark Benton, who is making his debut in musical theatre, and Lucy Benjamin, formerly of EastEnders.

Marcus, from Liverpool, was runner-up to girl group Little Mix on the TV talent show and released his debut album last year.

But when it came to being offered the role in Hairspray, he sought the advice of his X Factor mentor, Take That’s Gary Barlow.

“I asked him if doing it would be detrimental to my music career but he advised me to go for it.

“It gives me new things to talk about.

After all if I haven’t got life experience, I have nothing to write about.

“Gary has told me he’ll come along to a show.”

Marcus has no plans to leave his chart career behind. In fact, he’s preparing to unveil a new style on his second album.

“I’ve been in the studio working on tracks and it’s going to be a completely new sound. I don’t want it to sound like The X Factor.

“The show gave me a platform, but this new album will be true to what I am as a professional and what I want.

“I think it’s going to surprise people when it comes out at the end of the year.”

Hairspray is in the King’s Theatre Glasgow, from May 7-18
