Right now it’s Jose 1, Moyes 0

Wayne Rooney has played his last game for Manchester United. I honestly believe that.

I also believe Jose Mourinho will be the man to lure him away from Old Trafford.

And when he does, I think we’ll be able to chalk up Jose’s first victory over Davie Moyes.

Mind games have definitely come into play during the last week or so.

Just look at some of the things Jose has said in relation to Rooney a player, lest we forget, who’s still contracted to Manchester United.

He’s talked about how players who want to play for their country need to be playing regularly.

“If they want to go to the World Cup and they’re second choice at their club, then they’re in trouble,” he has said.

That’s clearly a response to Davie Moyes’ suggestion that Wayne will play second fiddle to Robin Van Persie this season.

Publicly at least, there’s been very little comeback from the United boss.

That’s why I think Jose’s going to emerge from this having got exactly what he wants.

But that’s not to say I think Davie is struggling in any way.

Yes, he’s probably had the odd moment where he’s had to think about how big a job he’s walked into.

But given a couple of months to bed in I think he’ll be fine.

In fact, I think he’s the perfect man for the job there.

But in this instance, Jose’s experience and skill with the media is paying off.

He’s looked at his side and he’s recognised that he needs a top striker.

With all due respect to Demba Ba and Fernando Torres, they aren’t the kind of players who’ll win you a Champions League.

That’s what Mourinho wants to do at Chelsea, and he’s shrewd enough to know he needs a truly world class front man.

Wayne Rooney fits the bill, and given his clear unhappiness at Old Trafford, Mourinho is playing a blinder.

He’s saying all the right things and making Wayne think about what a move to Chelsea could be worth to him.

I think it could be worth its weight in gold, especially with the World Cup just around the corner.

He can also help Jose achieve his European ambition.

So, for me, it’s a marriage made in heaven.
