Celtic deny asking Georgios Samaras to take a wage cut

The Greek internationalist who is out of contract at the end of the season is in talks over extending his career in the Hoops.

Reports in Greece claim the striker has been offered a two-year extension by Chief Executive Peter Lawwell but with a wage reduction of £2,000-a-week.

English Premier League club Hull City have already been credited with an interest as have Toronto FC.

Samaras’ representatives have been involved in talks with Celtic but the club insist the 28-year-old has not been asked to accept a wage cut.

With the player set to star at the World Cup finals after producing some top performances at Champions League level, it’s unlikely there will be a shortage of offers.

Samaras is believed to be on an £18,000-a-week deal at Parkhead and is keen to extend his stay in Glasgow after accepting a wage cut in the first place to move north of the border from Manchester City.

But reports claiming he has actually been offered just £16,000 to stay at the club have been denied by the Parkead powerbrokers.

Celtic have banked fortunes from back-to-back Champions League campaigns and from selling leading players Gary Hooper, Victor Wanyama and Kelvin Wilson in the summer.

Chief executive Lawwell is responsible for negotiating new contracts on behalf of the club and is confident he isn’t far away from striking a deal with ‘Sammi’.

Midfielder Joe Ledley is another player who is out of contract at the end of the season but he’s looking for a significant wage rise which means he could be set for the exit.
