Ross King: Mr Selfridge’s Jeremy Piven is sad to see the show come to an end

And when I asked for a Hotpoint freezer in Selfridges they just looked at me blankly. Sell fridges? No? Ach, fair enough.

The famous department store is one of the world’s favourite shops, despite the inaccurate name, and its early days have been immortalised by the brilliant TV series Mr Selfridge.

I bumped into the show’s star, Jeremy Piven, last week here in Los Angeles and we had a natter.

I’ve met Jeremy a few times and he’s a really friendly bloke who loves playing the Edwardian gent Harry Selfridge.

The current series, the fourth, will be the last, and I asked Jeremy what his favourite moments were.

He said he’s sad to see the end of this superb show but that he loved the time he’s spent in London.

Much of the cast were overqualified, he told me. Jez even singled out one of his co-stars for special praise – in fact she’s out of this world now.

“Many are moving on to starring roles,” he said.

“And one young lady who had a couple of lines has done not too badly – she’s now the star of one of the biggest movies of all time.”

Daisy Ridley played a brash New Yorker, Roxy Starlet, in quite a small role in the show. And now she’s just starred in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Not bad!

So what’s next for Jeremy? We laughed about a break as he said that in the final episodes he looks like a tired Shar-Pei!

“I’d love Mr Selfridge to be a musical in the West End,” he laughed. “I don’t sing, but I’d still be up for it.”

To borrow a line from Mr S: “Sold!”

I was at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last week to see Leonardo DiCaprio and Idris Elba land awards for The Revenant and Beasts Of No Nation.

My favourite moment was seeing the cast of Downton going to pick up the award for Best Drama Series.

I liked a line from Mrs Patmore, better known as Lesley Nicol, who said: “What the heck are we doing here, we’re up against your TV royalty?”

Nonsense, Downton deserves it!

Also so thrilled for Idris Elba, becoming first man to win two SAG awards in one night.

Even better – I voted for him. So next time I see him, he owes me a wee swally!
