Of course, the whole family would come to Balmoral together for summer breaks when the Queen’s four children were young.

And while Prince Andrew and Prince Edward may have enjoyed their stays, it was Charles and Anne who really took Scotland to their hearts as the years went on.

It’s not uncommon to see Charles in a kilt while on business or pleasure noth of the border.

Birkhall is now the private residence of The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall in Scotland.

The former home of the Queen Mother on the Balmoral estate on Royal Deeside, Her Late Majesty described it as a ‘little big house’.

Charles and Camilla spend their summer break here each year and enjoy the pursuits of fishing and walking in the beautiful countryside.

And who can forget The Old Man of Lochnagar? The children’s book written by Prince Charles in 1980 tells the tale of an old man who lives in a cave in the cliffs surrounding the corrie loch under the Lochnagar, a mountain which overlooks Balmoral.

Princess Anne is happy to wear her love for Scotland on her sleeve – especially when it comes to rugby.

Barely a rugby game passes without her supporting Scotland from the stands.

And of course, two of the Queen’s grandchildren have continued the Socottish connection.

Prince William studied at St Andrews University, where he met his wife-to-be, Kate, while Princess Anne’s daughter Zara married Mike Tindall at the Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh in 2011.
